Of the seven sacraments, Penance, particularly the reform of the sacrament since the Second Vatican Council, may be the least understood. The practice of the sacrament has ranged from a once-in-a-lifetime chance to turn from sin to a heavily attended weekly ritual. Penances have ranged from harsh tasks that might take a lifetime to accomplish, to a set of simple prayers said hurriedly before leaving the church. The sacrament has been called confession, penance, and most recently, reconciliation, reflecting the shifting emphasis from one element of the sacrament to another. But whatever name is used, the purpose of the sacrament is to foster spiritual growth and ongoing conversion in our life as a community and individuals.

Follow Up

The Religious Coalition for a Nonviolent Durham (RCND) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization comprised of individuals, who as an expression of their faith and goodwill, actively seek an end to the violence that is plaguing Durham neighborhoods.  “Our mission is to prevent and rectify the injustice of violence that segregates our city and diminishes our humanity.”

Living Without Enemies by Rev. Samuel Wells and Marcia Owen.  Listen to the NPR podcast from July 20, 2011 Living without Enemies

When Marcia Owen began the Religious Coalition for a Nonviolent Durham in 1992,  it was a traditional gun-control advocacy group. Over time, Marcia realized that new laws weren't going to address the root causes of the violence plaguing the Bull City. Instead of working for Durham's underserved communities, she began working with the people who lived in them. That particular method of social engagement is what Dean of Duke Chapel Sam Wells has been advocating in his theology for years. Wells and Owen have co-authored a new book called "Living Without Enemies - Being Present in the Midst of Violence” (IVP Books/2011). They join host Frank Stasio to talk about the history and evolution of the Religious Coalition for a Nonviolent Durham and the work they do to support families and communities affected by violence.

Homework suggested by Rev Wells - Initiate a conversation with someone by asking two questions: How are you rich? How are you poor? Then share with the other person how you are rich and how you are are poor.
