Total Youth Ministry (TYM) for High School Youth
The Holy Infant process for faith development addresses the many components of a comprehensive approach to youth ministry. Catechesis flows from the catechetical themes of the HI-life year. We also include such relevant youth topics as friendships, dating relationships, beliefs of different faiths, who Jesus is, moral decision making, teen depression, everyday challenges to faith, and justice issues.

The faith development process for high school youth involves:

  • Participation in parish life, particularly weekly attendance at the weekend liturgy
  • Participation in monthly intergenerational HI-life Gatherings
  • Faith formation at home, aided by the materials provided in the HI-life@home kit
  • Participation in TYM sessions on designated Sunday evenings
  • Retreat experiences
  • Social activities
  • Stewardship opportunities
  • Diocesan high school youth events – Back to Earth, Search, and Youth Convention

TYM Retreats and Lock-ins are held primarily to build friendships and peer faith community, but they also offer in-depth discussion and interactive activities on topics of vital interest to the youth.

TYM Social Activities include events, such as a tubing trip; a Ski Trip – an overnight winter community building activity; TYM Sports Night – an annual sports event with parents and catechists; Coffee House/Talent Show – an evening of entertainment with acts put on by the youth, youth ministers, and parents.

TYM Stewardship and Service Opportunities
TYM fosters youth stewardship through a variety of service projects in the parish and the greater community. Activities include serving in various liturgical and catechetical ministries, providing an evening of free child care, helping with Habitat for Humanity, serving at the Urban Ministries Community Kitchen dinner, visiting local nursing homes and orphanages, gleaning vegetables from the fields, migrant workers ministry, helping at the Food Bank, etc.

Diocesan Events
TYM youth are encouraged to participate in diocesan events which include:

  • Back-to-Earth (grades 9-12) – an overnight fall camping experience for youth to gather in an atmosphere of fun, faith, and fellowship. The event usually has an environmental stewardship theme and is held at the diocesan Short Journey Center in Smithfield.
  • Search (grades 11-12) – an affirming, faith exploring weekend touching peoples lives because it encourages us as participants to seek and find Christ in ourselves and in one another.
  • Youth Convention (grades 9-12) – a diocesan-wide weekend gathering that includes workshops, prayer, activities, dance, talent show, liturgy with the Bishop, Youth Board elections, awards and lots more.
  • Faithful Servant Youth Leadership Training (grades 9-12) – an event jointly sponsored by the Dioceses of Charlotte and Raleigh to develop and use their Christian leadership skills, and for the adults who work with them. Learn valuable tools for your parish and for life!
