No, the Mass in Slow Motion will only be done at the three weekend liturgies August 17th and 18th, 2024
Yes, this will be a valid Mass, the commentary is simply an addition to all of the regular prayers and readings.
No, Masses shouldn’t be any longer than usual, about an hour. We will adhere to the GIRM instruction that “The commentator’s remarks must be meticulously prepared and clear though brief.”
The Roman Catholic liturgy is full of symbols, language, and ritual action that has been developed over many centuries and many different cultural contexts. The Second Vatican Council tasked pastors especially to provide instruction to the faithful regarding the liturgy so that they might be able to fully participate, as is each of our right, privilege, and responsibility as the baptized. This Mass in Slow Motion is one way of helping the faithful enter more fully into the prayer of the Mass.
The Mass in Slow Motion was originally created several decades ago by Dr. Paul Ford, a professor and instructor in liturgy at St John Seminary in California. Dr. Ford recently adapted the commentator script to reflect new rubrics and texts, such as in the revised translation of the Roman Missal. At Holy Infant, we have carefully edited and adapted Dr. Ford’s script to focus the instruction and better align with how we celebrate the liturgy.
